Public Art and Sculpture

Antonia's work involves developing creative ideas and solutions with commissioners to create high quality artworks. The artworks are often site specific. Each project requires a variety of materials, approaches and techniques to be undertaken. This ensures a uniqueness in each work.

The collaborative nature of these public commissions means that people taking part can see their own work and ideas integrated into the final scheme of work.

Over 6 million buttons have been collected in the region, nationally and internationally for an installation and education programme. Funded by Kirklees Community History Service, this innovative and brave work addresses, reflects and engages the viewer on the horrors of genocide and inspirationally projects a positive message that promotes the theme “each person can make a difference”. The exhibition is currently on tour and the intention is to create a permanent memorial in Kirklees with the buttons at some point in the future.  When the exhibition opened, there were six million, thirty two thousand, five hundred and eighteen buttons. People are still sending in buttons.

Sheep
Commissioned by Igloo Regeneration for Marshall's Mill Holbeck Urban Village, Leeds, UK

With a height of four metres and featuring illuminating blue eyes, "Sheep" stands testament to the story about sheep that used to graze on the roof at neighbouring Temple Works, until one fell through a skylight. "Sheep's" height, stature and materials relate to the history, engineering, labour and creative thinking of the area from the past through to present day.

Chelsea Flower Show
Millennium Square, Leeds, UK

Antonia was commissioned by Leeds City Council to design with Martin Smith (Landscape Architect) the award-winning Leeds entry "From Freedom to the Future" at the 2004 Chelsea Flower Show.  Antonia worked with school students in Leeds and Durban (South Africa) to explore the theme and design of this acclaimed garden.

The Cage

Huddersfield Town Hall, Uk January - February 2008

Hull Uk November 2007

"The Cage" is a project about contemporary child slavery in the UK.  Research suggests there are currently approximately 5000 child slaves in the UK forced to work as child prostitutes, domestic slaves, begging, and more broadly as child labourers.  Antonia was commissioned to create a sculptural installation that explores this area.  The work aims to explore the misery, trauma, trickery and deceit that takes place under our very eyes.

The project is commissioned by Aim Higher, produced by Adam Strickson (Writer and Poet) working with Chris Squires from Impossible Theatre, Mandeep Sumra (Film maker and DJ), Antonia Stowe (Visual artist/Sculptor) with a broad formal partership of WISE, Hull Unversity, Connexions and schools and colleges from around the region.

Using the installation and 8 "narratives" scripts have been created for performance. The Cage is a visual performance and the installation is now a resource for the region.
